Complete WeChat Guide for Foreign Visitors

Last updated: 2026-05-26

WeChat (微信) is the messaging and social super-app that every Chinese person uses daily. It is also a powerful payment tool and gateway to countless services through mini programs. This guide covers everything foreign visitors need to know.

Network Environment Essentials

Critical — Read Before Arrival
WhatsApp, LINE, and Telegram are blocked in mainland China. WeChat is the only reliable messaging and social platform that works nationwide. Download it before your trip.

Pro Tip
Download WeChat before arriving. WhatsApp and LINE are blocked in China — WeChat is your lifeline for communication with friends, hotels, and merchants.

Step 1: Download & Register

Before Arrival (Outside China)

Download the App

PlatformMethodAvailability
iPhone / iPadApp Store search "WeChat"Globally available
AndroidGoogle Play search "WeChat"Globally available
Androidwww.wechat.com/en official siteOfficial, works in China
Android Users
Download WeChat from Google Play before arriving. After landing, Google Play is blocked. You can also use the official website www.wechat.com/en as a backup.

Note: WeChat international and domestic versions are the same app. It defaults to English when registered with an overseas phone number. All features work the same after you enter China.

Register an Account

1

Download & Open

Download WeChat from App Store or Google Play, tap "Sign Up".
2

Enter Phone Number

Use your international phone number with the correct country code (e.g., +1 for US, +44 for UK).
3

Complete Verification

Receive SMS verification code to complete registration.
Important
Important: Some new accounts require "friend verification" — an existing WeChat user (registered 6+ months) scans a QR code on your screen to verify you. Arrange this with a friend before your trip if possible.

Pre-Trip Checklist

  • Download WeChat
  • Download Alipay too
  • Enable international roaming
  • Ensure passport validity is at least 6 months
  • Prepare an international credit card
  • Find a WeChat veteran for verification backup
  • Print or screenshot this guide
  • Prepare ¥500–1000 cash backup

Step 2: Set Up WeChat Pay

WeChat Pay (微信支付) is the built-in payment feature. It is accepted by almost every merchant in China.

TL;DR
Key difference: Alipay's passport verification flow is smoother for tourists. WeChat Pay supports passports but some features are restricted for foreign-card users. Use Alipay as your primary payment method, and WeChat Pay as a supplement.

Link International Credit Card

Supported card networks: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover, Diners Club, UnionPay (international-issued)

Note: Physical cards have the highest success rate. Most virtual cards (e.g., virtual Revolut, Wise) are frequently rejected.

1

Go to Wallet

Tap "Me" → "Services" → "Wallet" → "Cards"
2

Add a Card

Tap "Add a Card", enter card number, expiry, CVV.
3

Verify Identity

Follow prompts to complete passport verification and facial recognition.
4

Set Payment PIN

Set a 6-digit payment PIN required for each transaction.

Common Binding Failures

IssueSolution
Name mismatchMust match passport exactly
Overseas phone restrictedUse Alipay for payment; chat/mini programs still work
Bank declinesContact bank to authorize China transactions
Still cannot bindWeChat Pay policies vary; rely on Alipay
TL;DR
Important: Even if WeChat Pay binding fails, you can still use all other WeChat features: chat, voice/video calls, mini programs, official accounts, scan, etc. You just cannot pay through WeChat.
Pro Tip
WeChat Pay binding policies for foreign users change frequently. Use Alipay as your primary payment method, and WeChat Pay as a supplement — especially for street vendors and rural areas (where WeChat Pay has wider coverage), and mini programs that don't support Alipay (such as some city transit systems and restaurant ordering systems).

Step 3: How to Pay

Show Your QR Code (Merchant Scans You)

  1. Tap "+" on home → "Money"
  2. Select "Pay", show your QR code
  3. Merchant scans you

Scan Merchant's Code

  1. Tap "+" on home → "Scan"
  2. Aim at merchant's QR code
  3. Enter amount → confirm

Fee Structure

Transaction AmountFee
¥200 or lessFree
Above ¥2003% service fee (charged by WeChat Pay)
Bank foreign exchange feeYour card issuer may charge an additional 1–3%

How to save on fees:

  • Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card (e.g., Wise, Revolut, Charles Schwab)
  • Keep single transactions under ¥200 to avoid the 3% fee
  • Split large payments into smaller transactions (caution: may trigger fraud alerts)
TL;DR
2025 Promotional Campaign (time-limited): First-time users get full fee waiver on daily transactions up to ¥1,000 RMB for 60 consecutive days. All international card users get 3% fee waiver on every transaction under ¥200. Campaign was initially set to run through end of 2025 and may be extended. As of May 2026 — always check the latest in your Wallet.

Payment Limits

Limit TypeAmount
Single transaction¥6,500
Monthly (verified)¥50,000
Monthly (unverified)¥15,000
Annual¥65,000
Pro Tip
Upload your passport photo in the app to complete real-name verification and increase your monthly limit to ¥50,000.

Messaging

  • Text, voice, video calls — similar to WhatsApp
  • Create group chats for work or travel

Lightweight apps that run inside WeChat — no download needed.

How to find: Pull down on WeChat home → search mini program name

Useful mini programs:

  • Meituan (美团外卖) — food delivery
  • DiDi (滴滴出行) — ride-hailing
  • Trip.com (携程) — travel booking
  • Shared bikes

Red Packets (Hongbao)

A unique Chinese social payment — send money in festive or group settings. Note: You can receive red packets, but cannot send them with a foreign-linked card.

Official Accounts

Follow businesses, attractions, airports for info and services. Many restaurants use official accounts instead of paper menus.

Step 5: Communicating with Merchants

Important
Many merchants say "wēi xìn zhī fù" rather than "WeChat Pay".

What to Say

Don't Say ThisSay This Instead
"Do you accept WeChat Pay?""Can I use wēi xìn zhī fù?"
"Can I pay by phone?""Can I use wēi xìn zhī fù?"

Pronunciation Guide
